Oriental theology suggests that ‘Spirit’ enters the foetus, not at conception, but at around 4 months. This being the case the event obviously takes place with the mother oblivious of it. Perhaps it occurs while she is asleep, or shopping, or maybe watching television. But surely this is a momentous event and it is as such that the artist has attempted to portray it.

The divine presence pushes back the darkness, tendrils of pure spirit flicker down, searching. Suddenly, one such finger discovers the dormant infant, makes the connection and, pulsing with energy, thickens into a spiritual umbilical. The transfer completes. Here, now, is new life.
